2 Ferrari F40’s crashed

A Ferrari F40, reg F40PRX, well know within the motoring community due to it’s use in Gumball rallys and other such events, was crashed last Thursday 16th Jan by a service technician on the A5 London Road in Markyate, Hertfordshire.

The 3 litre twin turbo V8 icon, producing nearly 500bhp and supposedly valued at over two million pounds, was being driven down the road during recent freezing temperatures when the driver accelerated and broke traction, spinning the car across the road, mounting the kerb and taking down a lamp post before landing on its side. The front clam shell was torn off along with damage to the rear bodywork and suspension. The driver was taken to hospital but is believed to have been unharmed.

Similarly, earlier in January, another F40 owned by Formula 1 driver Lando Norris, but being driven by a friend of his, also spun out in the winding roads above Monte Carlo. Internet footage is similar to the previous incident with traction being lost on a relatively straight section of road, tossing the car into a spin where it meets its fate with a crash barrier. Norris’ car seems to have faired a lot better though with only cosmetic damage and a presumably embarrassed driver.

The incident has raised discussions about the common average ages of tyres generally still used on older and classic sports and supercars due to low availablity and high costs. Pirelli tyres for a Bugatti Veyron for example have been reported as costing around forty two thousand pounds a set. The F40 is said to be nearly impossible to write off from a financial point of view, many in the industry have said it is very likely the car will be rebuilt, I’m just glad I’m not getting that bill
